DESCRIPTION:Title – Inertial Fusion Energy: the quest for the optimum sol
id-state laser amplifier mediumSpeaker – Stéphane Reyné (CEA-CESTA)Dat
 e – Wednesday\, 28 October 2026\, 16:00 Central European Time (CET) The
quest for an optimal solid-state laser amplifier medium for Inertial Fusio
n Energy has been investigated through a systematic analysis of more than
a hundred optical materials\, including glasses\, single crystals and cera
mics. This work emphasizes the intrinsic difficulty of simultaneously sati
sfying the key spectroscopic and thermo-mechanical requirements that ultim
ately govern both the selection of the gain medium and the overall archite
cture of an IFE driver. As no single material fully satisfies all performa
nce criteria proposed in this paper\, material selection must inevitably r
ely on priority trade-offs driven by appropriate choices between spectrosc
opic and thermo-mechanical properties as key parameters. Beyond single cry
stals and glasses\, ceramic materials are identified as a promising techno
logical pathway\, offering improved thermo-mechanical properties and the c
apability to fabricate larger-scale components with laser-grade optical qu
ality. Several directions for future research are also identified. In part
icular\, co-doping approaches and composite material designs may provide a
dditional degrees of freedom for optimizing both spectroscopic performance
  and thermo-mechanical stability.
