Translating academic texts with AI

AI can translate a text within seconds, but a fluent result is not necessarily an accurate or appropriate one. A high-quality translation must preserve the meaning, communicative purpose, tone and level of certainty of the original while also reading naturally in the target language.
This page presents a practical workflow for translating a German academic abstract into English for submission to an international journal. This is a high-stakes, gatekeeping text. Editors and reviewers will judge not only the research it describes, but also the clarity, precision and professionalism of the English.
The workflow combines ChatGPT, DeepL and Linguee. Each tool performs a different role. The goal is not to accept the first translation produced by any one system, but to analyse, compare, investigate, evaluate and revise.

This resource was developed under the project titled Empowering Education: Exploring AI for Teaching and Learning at ZHAW. The project was created in response to the 2025 Transformative Education Fund, or TEF, project call.
Its purpose is to make knowledge about artificial intelligence more accessible to teachers and to support its thoughtful use in teaching.
